Human Nature: Sovereignty and Creation

God is sovereign over all creation, yet God made creation as a real physical space-time universe "outside of Himself", that is, it is not an extension of God's essence.

Heresies arise in two directions: to exaggerate the autonomy and independence of the creation at the expense of God's sovereignty; this leads to naturalism, materialism, mechanism, and scientism. These are dominant intellectual views in our time.

To exaggerate sovereignty is to select humans out from the creation as "gods": independent, autonomous agents who themselves are unique and can take the place of God over nature. This option is taken by some sects, but it in effect it dethrones God. "Let God be true, though every man be false." (Romans 3:4).
